2020 NEBCSA Annual Meeting
January 6-9 | Hilton Philadelphia at Penns Landing
Philadelphia, PA

The Northeastern Plant, Pest, and Soils Conference (NEPPSC) is organized in cooperation with the Northeastern Weed Science Society (NEWSS), the Northeast Branch of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America (NE ASA-CSSA-SSSA), and the American Society of Horticultural Science-Northeast Region (NE-ASHS). The goal of this meeting is to provide a venue to bring together people with interests in entomology, plant pathology, weeds, horticulture, agriculture, agronomy, and soil science for the purpose of sharing of ideas and the presentation of the results of scientific studies and outreach programs. The members of the NEPPSC strive to enhance educational programs and the promotion of sound scientific solutions for our shared areas of interests in the Northeastern region of the United States of America.

Program Overview

  • Monday featured society board and committee meetings in the afternoon, and the event kickoff, a social mixer themed “One Line Interviews”, featuring a speed-dating format for graduate students to meet other society members while enjoying fun, fellowship, food, and free libation.
  • Tuesday started with the Poster session, then transitioned into general programming featuring Society awards, and President’s address. The afternoon featured the meeting theme symposium Inclusion and Diversity in Science, and the day ended with section roundtables featuring industry updates and facilitated discussion, leading to an evening social.
  • Wednesday featured graduate student programming, with an all-societies student oral presentation session, and an afternoon symposium themed Overcommitted and Overstressed: A Primer to Our Future Careers, featuring Society members providing how-to and how-not-to insights on career management and trajectory. After an evening of fellowship, attendees regathered for the now iconic Dessert Social.
  • Thursday attendees conducted concurrent sessions hosting the remainder of the volunteered content, divided into sessions featuring Agronomic Crops; Fruits and Vegetables; and Turf, Ornamental, and Non-crop.
  • Other highlights included the graduate student luncheon, graduate student night-out, and a new meeting element, a Poster Slam. Each student poster presenter had two minutes to summarize their work in a general session setting.

2017 Northeastern Plant Health and Pest Conference

The 2017 Northeastern Plant Health and Pest Conference was held January 3-6, 2017 in Philadelphia, PA. The meeting provided a venue for the sharing of ideas and the education of members in the fields of agronomy, entomology, horticulture, and weed science. In addition, it provided outreach to practitioners and other professionals associated with the aforementioned disciplines. During the meeting, the Northeastern Branch ASA-CSSA-SSSA (NEBCSA) recognized the 2016 award winners. The NEBCSA awards are conferred by the branch in recognition of exceptional contributions to the agronomic, crop, or soil sciences, education, and/or service.

2016 Northeastern Plant Health and Pest Conference

2013 Northeastern Branch CSA Annual Meeting
Nutrient Management for Non-Traditional Agriculture
June 23-26 | University of Delaware
Newark, DE

The 2013 meeting of the Northeastern Branch of ASA, CSSA, and SSSA was held on the University of Delaware Campus in Newark, DE from June 23-26, 2013. The theme of the meeting was “Expanding our Boundaries: Nutrient Management for Non-Traditional Agriculture”. The Symposium focused on the unique issues that affect nutrient management for non-agronomic commodities and industries – areas including commercial vegetable production for both processing and fresh markets, the landscape, greenhouse and nursery industries, golf courses and other turf grass operations and equine pastures for the pleasure horse industries – all important components of agriculture in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Region.

2011 Northeastern Branch Annual Meeting

The 2011 Northeastern Branch Meeting of ASA, CSSA, and SSSA was held June 26-29 at the Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa, Chesapeake Beach, MD. This meeting was designed to allow for collaboration and networking among agronomy, crop, soil, and environmental sciences professionals and students.  It was also an excellent opportunity to students to present their research finding and talk with professionals in their area of research. 2010 Northeastern Branch Annual Meeting

The 2010 Northeastern Branch Meeting of ASA, CSSA, and SSSA met June 27-30 at Cornell University, with a thoughtful program of speakers and activities. 

The program featured: 

Sunday Evening Plenary Session - "Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Food Production in the year 2040" with Dr. Chris Barrett.  Dr. Barrett discussed the changing demand and supply conditions for world food production and the implications for US and northeastern agriculture.  He emphasized not only commercial opportunities and challenges but also the humanitarian and environmental challenges implicit in the evolving agricultural economy.

Monday Plenary Session - continued from Sunday and featured:

  • Northeast US Food Production - Tom Overton and Mike van Amburgh, both with Cornell University
  • Northeastern Dairy Farm Systems - Charlie Sniffen, Fencrest, LLC and Ev Thomas, Oak Point Agronomics

2009 Northeastern Branch Annual Meeting
12-15 July | Portland, ME

The 2009 ASA-CSSA-SSSA Northeastern Regional Branch Annual Meeting was held 12-15 July in Portland, Maine, at the Holiday Inn By the Bay.  The meeting featured a plenary session on sustainable production systems, presentation sessions, tours, banquet, and a special session on Advancing organic production systems in the Northeast: research results and opportunitites and possible roles for agricultural service providers.

2008 Annual Meeting of the ASA, CSSA and SSSA Northeastern Branch
July 13-16 | Montreal, Canada

The 2008 Annual Meeting of the Northeastern Branch was held jointly in a conference co-sponsored by the Canadian Society of Agronomy and the Canadian Society of Horticultural Science and was hosted by McGill University, Montreal, Canada at the downtown campus.

The conference featured a plenary symposium on Biofuels, Bioproducts and Ecological Intensification and many opportunities for presenting research and interacting with colleagues from the U.S. and Canada. This conference was also a great opportunity for graduate students to present their research and meet students from other universities.

2007 Annual Meeting
June 24-26 | Penn State Conference Center
State College, PA

A Joint Conference of the Northeastern Branch of ASA-CSSA-SSSA and the American Forage and Grassland Council. The conference brought together producers, scientists and forage industry professionals together with members of the Northeastern Branch of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America, from across the US and Canada. Attendees presented papers, attended tours, students participated in the graduate student paper presentation competition, and saw friends and colleagues.

2006 Northeastern Branch Annual Meeting
July 11 | Philadelpia, PA

Held in conjunction with the World Congress of Soil Science. The 2006 Annual Meeting was condensed into a one-day agenda, on 11 July , 2006, in Philadelphia, PA. The meeting was held at the Philadelphia Marriott, in conjunction with the World Congress of Soil Science. The program featured graduate presentations and a business meeting and awards presentations - for both students and the traditional branch awards. This was followed by a social hour.

2005 Northeastern Branch Annual Meeting
10-13 July | Storrs, CT

The 2005 Annual Meeting of the ASA and SSSA Northeastern Branch was held in Storrs, Connecticut from July 10-13. Of note, the planning committee organized an interesting symposium on the "Effect of Climate Change on Northeast Agriculture." Symposium topics included:

  • Evidence of Climate Change in the Northeastern United States
  • Climate Change Impacts on NE Agriculture and Farmer Adaptation
  • Weed Ecology and Weed Control in a High CO2 World
  • Agricultural Carbon Sequestration: Practical and Policy Issues
  • Climate Change and Agriculture: Challenges and Opportunities for Extension

Additional activities included a Graduate Student Paper Session, targeted sessions in both crops and soils, poster sessions, tours and awards. The meeting presentations are being provided to all interested members as a way to disseminate our sciences.
