Senators release bipartisan ‘Industries of the Future’ legislation

January 16, 2020

Leaders of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee unveiled bipartisan legislation that would require the White House to sketch out a plan for increasing R&D investments in “Industries of the Future,” specifically artificial intelligence, quantum information science (QIS), biotechnology, next-generation telecommunications, advanced manufacturing, and synthetic biology. The plan would chart a path for increasing annual spending across research areas tied to these industries of the future to $10 billion by fiscal year 2025. The legislation was released the day before a hearing on the same topic.
